Technology Milestones in Communication

  • Telegraph

    Telegraph
The first means of rapid and long distance communication came abut from the electric telegraph. The first models were developed in Britain and largely used at and for railroads, and the Morse system caught on quickly in the US, especially in post offices. Improvements to the telegraph came up constantly, such as telegraphs with a keyboard and telegraphs that automatically translated signals into letters. The telegraph also offered a speedy way to internationally communicate
  • Telephone

    Telephone
While early designs of the telephone dated back to the 1830s in Italy, the first successful and commercially used one was Alexander Graham Bell's patent in the 1870s. They were largely used as an invention for businesses, until the early 20th century when they became popular in homes.
  • Teletype

    Teletype
An invention that combined the telegraph and the typewriter by directly sending printed messages to another teletype. The use of teletypes was largely in the US government and military, but also in large businesses and the stock market.
  • ARPANET

    ARPANET
The first network to implement TCP/IP. Arose largely because of the cold war, and the government wanted a system of computers that could communicate without failing if one were to lose signal.
  • Broadband

First implementation of a high-speed internet connection that could be used commercially, using fiber optics. Greatly increased what could be shared and done on the internet.
