Great Railroad Strike of 1877
Wages were cuts from railroad company Baltimore and Ohio railroads. In response, this caused over 100,000 works to go on strike. Starting in West Virginia, spreading to other states. It quickly turned into a violet protest and the state military was needed. The United States was on hold as their number 1 transportation was down. The aftermath was death and millions of dollars in property damage. This was empowering for many american citizens as they stood against the American labor conditions. -
Chinese exclusion act
This act was signed into law by president Chester A . Arthur. This was in response to anti-Chinese sentiments. These immigrants were blamed for wages and labor decline. Once the act was enacted Chinese immigrants were denied the right to citizenship, most carry identification and this suspension lasted for 10 years. This was just one of many example of the government discrimination on a race. -
Spainish- American War
This was a conflict between the United States and Spain. Cuban had been fighting for independence from Spain for years. Then the USS Maine was attacked and sunk. 266 sailors were killed during this combat. Spain was blamed for this. Battles went on from August 25, 1898 to July of 1898. A result was Spain ceded Cuba, Puerto Rico and Guam to the United States as well as the purchase of the Philippines from Spain for $20 million. -
Panama Canal
The panama Canal was built by the United States in 1914. Theodore Roosevelt encouraged the building of the canal to increase trade. It worked as the canal helped get transportation quick and low cost. -
World war 1
This was a global conflict as a result of the assignation of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. During the war, president Woodrow Wilson remained neutral. However, after submarine warfare from Germany the United States joined the War in April of 1917. Many things changed at home as women were left to keep up with the jobs. The war was resolved with the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 which basically blamed Germany. -
Prohabition
Prohibition was the ban on the production, sale and transport of alcohol. This amendment was a result of the temperance movement. It was blamed to be evil and the root of moral issues in the United States. However, when alcohol was banned it had the opposite effect. It made crime rates and the rise of organized crime. In addition, the underground sale of alcohol was often dangerous. -
The roaring 20s
This era was known for its economic boom. Not only economically did the United States rise but culturally, socially and more. Some examples include the rise of jazz music. Many technical advancements were made such as the automobile, telephone and films. This ear would come to an end towards the end of the 1920s from a stock market crash. -
Women's suffrage
This was the struggle for the women right to vote. Many years and advocates were needed to gain these rights through the 19th amendment. Many women marched, wrote and protested for their rights. Even with the 19th amendment passed, the struggle and stereotypes for women would continue on for many years to come. -
The Great Depression
The great depression was caused by a crash in the stock market. Resulting in many people pulling stocks and losing money. Banks could not pay these people back. This did not only affect the United States, but the whole globe. This caused high unemployment, poverty and political change as a result. -
The New Deal
During President Roosevelt's term he sparked the idea of a new deal. These deals were in response to the Great Depression. His three goals were to relief, recover and reform. Overall his goal was to help the lives that suffered during the Great Depression. Programs such as the Works Progress administration and social security act were taken in place to help aid workers. -
Attack on Pearl Habor
This was an attack on a major naval base in Oahu, Hawaii. This was to do damage to the navy so the United States can't infer with the Japanese's plan to take military actions in Southeast Asia. Many american lives were lost. As a result, the United states formally entered World War 2. -
World War 2
The United States entered the war after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Many social impacts were made during this time. Women entered the work force for the first time, African Americans entered the military and for the bad is the Japanese interment camp. The United States aided allies who would eventually win. -
The Cold War
This was a long stand war against the Soviet union. Tensions rose against the democratic United States and communist Soviet union. Many things happened during this silent war. The race for the biggest nuclear bomb was lingering. There was no direct fighting but they chose opposing sides in wars such as the Vietnam war. The cold war ended with the collapse of the Soviet union in 1991. -
Truman Doctrine
This Doctrine outlines by President Harry S. Truman was in support of democratic nations. This meant containing the communist and stopped the spread. This said the United States would help politically, economically and military if the nation went against the communist views. -
Brown V. Board of Education
This supreme case challenge the racial discrimination to African Americans. Linda Brown was denied access to a white school near her home and were adamant about going across town to the school for African Americans. A lawsuit was filed and brought to the supreme court. It was ruled that racial segregation was unconstitutional. It was the start of civil rights and racial equality. -
JFK Assassination
1963 President JFK and his wife were driving through downtown Dallas when shits were fired and the assassination of JFK happened. Lee Harvey Oswald was convicted for the assassination of JFK. Lyndon B Johnson took office and fulfilled many wishes such as civil rights as JFK would want. -
Civil rights Act
This act was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson. This act ended the on going discrimination on color, sex and religion. Things were improved such as the ending of segregation and voting rights were fixed to fit all Americans. Many peoples lives such as Martian Luther King Jr dedicated their lives to improving the rights of Americans who were facing discrimination. -
March on Wahington
The March on Washington was a turning point in the civil rights movement. It paved the way for many influence people including Martian Luther King, who have his infamous "I have a dream speech". Over 250,00 people came in support of this event. This March was to spread awareness of the discrimination going on within the country. -
Apollo 11 Moon landing
During the cold War, Neil Armstrong becomes the first human to walk on the moon during the space race. This proved the United States technical advancements were advanced over the Soviet union during the cold War. These goals to have a man step foot on the moon were set my former President JFK during 1961. -
Watergate Scandal
5 men broke into the Democratic National committee and attempted to steal important documents. It was traced back to President Richard Nixon. He hired these people to get something against the party and help benefit him in the reelection. The downfall was the tapes Nixon recorded in the oval office that stated he had something to do with the break in. In 1974, Richard Nixon, facing impeachment, formally resigned from his presidency.
