Jackson began his United States Army career as a second lieutenant in the 1st U.S. Artillery Regiment. The Mexican-American War from was his first war to fight in. He served at the Siege of Veracruz and the battles of Contreras, Chapultepec, and Mexico City. Jackson earning two brevet promotions, and the regular army rank of first lieutenant. He first met obert E. Lee in Mexico.

In the spring of 1851 Jackson accepted a new taching job at the Virginia Military Institute. He became Professor of Natural and Experimental Philosophy and Instructor of Artillery. His teaching techniques are still used today.

While an instructor at VMI in 1853, Thomas Jackson married Elinor Junkin. Ellie gave birth to a son, but she experienced difficulties and died one hour later.

The Confecerate forces were failing, when Jacksons reinforcements help the Confederates compete in this battle. This battle gave him his nickname. Sadly He was shot in the arm and had to have it amputated.
