1972: Mandel graduates with a Masters Degree in Political Science from the University of Windsor. (He also has an Associate of Arts Degree from Lincoln College in Lincoln, Illinois, and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Miami University).

1972: Mandel moves from Windsor to Edmonton, Alberta in 1972. He helps run his father’s RV dealership. Over the next three decades he deals mainly in commercial real estate.

October 15, 2001: Mandel wins a seat as Ward 1 councillor by 33 votes.

October 18, 2004: Comes from behind to win the mayor’s job, defeating incumbent Bill Smith and former councillor Robert Noce.

June 17, 2005: Mandel starts the first Mayor Pride Brunch, in 2005. The event raises money for Camp fYrefly, a camp for LGBTQ youth.

October 15, 2007: Wins a second term as mayor.

March 25, 2008: Committee calls for Edmonton to replace Rexall Place with a new downtown arena, starting a five-year push led by Mandel to see the project completed.

July 8, 2009: Council votes to close the City Centre Airport in stages and redevelop the site for homes, offices and businesses.

Monday, October 18, 2010: Mandel wins race to continue as mayor; receiving about twice the votes of nearest rival. (The election campaign focused mainly on the downtown airport’s future and whether the issue should be settled with a plebiscite, which council has turned down).

Sept 5, 2012: Mandel becomes a grandfather.

Jan. 23, 2013: Council approves tentative arena deal with Oilers owner Daryl Katz.

April 2, 2013: Mandel set to publicly announce whether he’ll run for a fourth term as mayor.
