  • Japan invades Manchuria

    The Japanese tried to fix economic problems through expansion. Invading Manchuria caused Japanese agression where China and Indochina are going against one another. The US was limited to setting embargos on the Japanese. Japan saw this as threats.
  • Nuremberg Trials

    Hitler passed anti-semitic and racial laws that took away the rights of Jews. Hitler soon committed suicide to avoid prosecution.
  • Munich Pact

    France and Britain agreed upon allowing Hitler to take extra land. This was said so Hitler couldn't have anymore territory after the concession. Hitler had disobeyed the deal and continued to take territory. This led to the end of the European policy of appeasement.
  • Kristallnacht

    Also the "night of broken glass". Nazis killed and harmed Jews while vandalizing their homes. Nearly 100 Jews died.
  • Neutrality Acts of 1939

    This was also knowns as "Cash and Carry". It gave the nations an opportunity to buy goods from the US. They'd need to pay upfront and carry it away on their own.
  • Germany Invades Poland

    France and Britain called war on Germany. Germany responded by invading France and launching air raids on Britain. Roosevelt had the Neutrality acts amended because of Germany.
  • Lend-Lease Act

    Roosevelt was told to get rid of any government by Congress. He thought it was necessary for defense.
  • Atlantic Charter

    A document signed by Roosevelt and Churchill to apply self-determination. It also shows how Roosevelt was committed to solving Germany and Japan's rivalry.
  • Exec Order 8022

    This prohibited ethnic or racial discrimination. It was made in response to Philip Randolph's threat.
  • Atlantic Conference

    Strengthened alliances between the US and Britain because of the signing of the Atlantic Charter. Signed by both Roosevelt and Churchill.
  • Yalta Conference

    The plans to finish the defeat of Europe. Also the ideas of European post-war plans.
  • Attack on Pearl Harbor

    The Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor unexpectedly. They attacked due to the embargos which they thought were threats. Germany then declared war on the US.
  • Exec Order 9066

    This authorized the internment of Americans of Japanese descent and resident aliens from Japan. Residents were told to sell their property and belongings and head to the camps for deportation.
  • Operation Torch

    The North Africa invasion that was set to free the Mediterranean Sea from Germany's control. Along with protecting the oil fields in the Middle East.
  • Battle of Midway

    Midway has victory which stopped the Japanese. This also set them on defense.
  • D-Day

    Also known as "Invasion of Normandy". This had provided the Western front.
  • Battle of the Bulge

    This was the last German offensive. Also the beginning of the end for the Nazis.
  • Korematsu v. United States

    Korematsu was a Japanese American who had refused to leave his home due to the exec order 9066. He took the case to the supreme court and lost. He was held as constitutional.
  • Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

    Truman dropped atomic bombs on Japan. He had hoped this prevented fighting on the Japanese home islands.
  • United Nations is created

    Used to promote international cooperation. An intergovernmental organization that was made to create and maintain international order.
  • Truman Doctrine

    A promise to stop the spread of communism in Europe. Was applied when the US gave military and financial aid to Greece and Turkey.
  • Berlin Airlift

    The supply of food and other supplies dropped by the US into Berlin. Everything was airdropped.
  • Marshall Plan

    Financial aid offered by the US to promote the rebuilding economics. Prevents European countries to fall into communism.
  • Israel is established

    The US gave support to the self-determination of Jews for creating Israel. It demonstrated German war crime impacts.
  • US establishes NATO

    NATO stands for "North Atlantic Treaty Organization". It established a military alliance that was aimed at the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union organized the Warsaw Pact in 1955.
  • Soviet Union tests Atomic Bomb

    The US soon used the hydrogen bomb. The nuclear arms race was started.
  • Korean Conflict

    North Korea (communists) invaded South Korea. Truman's administration believed that this had been planned by the Soviet Union.
  • Soviet Union launches Sputnik

    The space race took place at the same time the Soviet Union launched the sputnik. The US soon passed the National Defense Education Act.
  • National Defense Education Act

    This act promoted science and math skills. This also gave less competition to the Soviet Union and gave the fear that the US wouldn't win the arms race.
  • Rise of the Berlin Wall

    Berlin was divided into two. This separated East and West Germany. The wall kept people from escaping to freedom.
  • Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan

    The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan to get a friendly government. The US supported the Afghan resistance movement.
  • Fall of the Berlin Wall

    The fall was considered an end to the Cold War. The soviet union then collapsed in 1991
