  • American School for the Deaf (ASD)

    American School for the Deaf (ASD)
    The American School for the Deaf was founded in 1917, in Hartford, Connecticut by Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet, Mason Cogswell, and Laurent Clerc. This paved the way for people with disabilities which helped achieve educational skills needed to earn a living. Early on the school was established using sign language, and further into the future and currently helping students who have trouble hearing and those who are deaf.
  • Brown V. Ferguson

    Brown V. Ferguson
    Brown V. Ferguson was a case brought to the supreme court due to segregation in the school system. After the ruling on this case public schools were desegregated in the United States. This built the legislation for Special Educational students in public schools as in Brown V. Board of Education "guaranteed "equal protection" under the law to all people."
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    Lyndon B. Johnson signed this act providing grants to state operated schools for students with disabilities and paving the way for students for special education.
  • Congressional Investigation

    Congressional Investigation
    This investigation led congress to investigate as it was informed that students with disabilities were not receiving an appropriate education. "1.75 million handicapped children are receiving no educational services at all, and 2.5 million handicapped children are receiving an inappropriate education." This led to the Education for All Handicapped Act of 1975.
  • Mills v. Board of Education of District of Columbia

    Mills v. Board of Education of District of Columbia
    Seven students with disabilities were denied an education in the District of Columbia, this case was fought that students need to be treated equally and have the right to a public education. The court came to a decision that free education should be offered free of charge to all students regardless of any disabilities.
  • The Rehabilitation Act

    The Rehabilitation Act
    This act was pushed to prohibit any discrimination against individuals with special needs or disability, giving students seeking special education in public schools to be treated fair and equal.
  • Education for All Handicapped Act

    Education for All Handicapped Act
    Also known as Public Law 94-142 this was passed to ensure all students receive appropriate public education for children with all disabilities.
  • The Special Ed Advocate

    " Eligibility of child with ADD/ADHD; states and IDEA compliance test; creative uses of Wrightslaw: Special Education Law"
    Tests were made to see if students passed the test created by the state to evaluate and identify students with disabilities so they may be located and evaluated so they may be placed where they need to be and helped by resources provided by the school and the state.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    Accountability has been enforced for student educational outcomes "lower-performing and higher-performing students and districts.[24] To achieve these goals, NCLB required all federally funded public schools to administer a standardized test annually to students in selected grades.[25] To improve student outcomes, the act identified several strategies school districts could employ, such as teacher professional development, educational technology, and activities to involve parents"
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act

    Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act
    Signed by President George W. Bush and Congress increased the focus on accountability and improved outcomes by emphasizing reading, early intervention, and research-based instruction by requiring that special education teachers be highly qualified.
