Sputnik 1 is Launched by USSR
Sputnik 1 was a satelite the size of a beachball. It was made to orbit the Earth. This event was important because it was the start of the Space Race and if the Russians could launch a satelite they could launch nuclear missles. -
USSR Sends First Human to Space
The USSR takes a even bigger lead by sending the first human in space for a full orbit aroung Earth in Vostok 1. This is important because now the Americans are even farther behind. -
Americans Comeback
The Americans send out a person to space trying to comeback. This is important because it shows that the Americans are not out of the race. -
America Going for the Win
America comes out and says they are going to have the first person to land on the moon and return safely. This event is important because if America can do this they will definetly win the Space Race. -

The Russian have pulled ahead again. This Important because now people are starting to doubt that the Americans can keep up with the Russians. -
America Loses the Lives of 3 Americans During Test Launch
Americans Roger Chaffee, Ed White, and Virgil Grissom lost Their lives in a fire in a test launch for Apollo 1. This is important because this dlayed the NASA program for a year and set them even farther behind. -
America Wins
America lands first person on the moon Neil Armstrong with the famous words "One small step for man, One giant leap for mankind." This was important because the Americans won the space race. -
Soviets launch Space Station
the Soviets launched space station called Salyut 1 on April 19, 1971. This is important because it is the first space staion in space. The crew died while rentering Earth's atmosphere after spending a record 23 days in space. -
Americans Aren't Far Behind
The Americans sent up Skylab on May 14, 1973. This was important for the Americans because they were not far behind the Russians. -

American and Russian crews dock together to show end to the war. This is important because the Cold War is finally over.
