    April meeting of the Farmers Club held at Host Hubble’s (Smithfield Hotel) on the evening of the 7th instant. Thomas Hogarth Esq. J.P. presided. The routine business having been transacted, the President introduced the Hon. John H. Barrow, MLC who delivered a lecture on “The Progress and Prospects of the Agricultural Interest in South Australia".

    Munno Para East – Present – all members except Mr. Bald. Clerk to take the necessary steps to have the obstructions on road leading from Gawler Road to Mill Section. The Stationman employed on main line from Smithfield asked permission of the Council to build a house on reserve near Hogarth’s. Permission refused. Mr. Gale waited upon Council and stated he had accidently burnt the bridge in Long Gully, and that he was willing to rebuild same as soon as possible.

One Black Mare, switch tail, shod all round, two hind feet white, branded like DW near shoulder. One Chestnut horse, four white feet, shod all round, white streak down face, no brands visible, aged, and collar marked. If not claimed will be sold June 19, 1865 at noon.

    A movement is on foot to fence in the Presbyterian Church here, and I hope they will not stop there, but plant the enclosure and erect the necessary buildings for general convenience, as many persons attend from a great distance.

    Farmer’s Club – Meeting held 7th July at Host Hubble’s. Mr. Catts, in the absence of the President was voted to the chair, and opened the meeting by calling on Mr. Talbot to read his promised paper on “The Soil”.
  • Rifle match

    Rifle match
    Wednesday July 12th. A rifle match took place at our own range today between 10 of the Williamstown and 10 of our own company. In the evening we had a spread at the Railway Hotel, Smithfield (Hubble’s). Captain Peterson and Warren presided. Everyone appeared to enjoy themselves and as the clock struck 10 we rose to depart mutually pleased at having spent so pleasant a day.
  • YMCA meeting

    A recitation from Dickense’ (sic) works was given at the hotel by a Mr. Clarkson, who chose for his subject ‘A Christmas Carol. The Y.M.C.A.’s will endeavour to procure Mr. Clarkson’s services for an evening’s entertainment on behalf of their funds, and those who fail to attend will miss a literary treat such as is rarely offered to the public.

  • Public lecture

    On Wednesday evening a lecture was given in connection with the Y.M.C.A. in the Presbyterian church. The President, the Rev. Mr. Gordon having other engagements was unable to be present. The Vice President took the chair. Having briefly introduced Mr. J.B. Talbot to the meeting, that gentleman, for an hour and a half, gave a series of readings from Ingoldsby, Sir Walter Scott and other authors.

    Ashton’s Circus paid us a visit yesterday, and by their clever performance, the troupe have secured the goodwill and patronage here, in case they should at any future time pay us another visit.

    The monthly meeting of the Farmers Club was held on Monday evening, the 6th instant. In the absence of the President, Mr. Catts was voted to the chair. The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed.   • School inspection

    The Second Inspector’s report indicated visits to 22 schools, situated in various country districts. They appeared to be in a prosperous condition. Speaking of applicants for licences, a new school at Smithfield was thus referred to: Miss McLellan is teaching in a suitable room and in a satisfactory manner. Her school is composed chiefly of girls. Mr. Catt’s school, also situated at Smithfield consisted principally of boys. The number of scholars in his school and Miss McLellan’s was alike.

    Smithfield Farmers Club – The usual monthly meeting of the above club was held on Friday evening 3rd inst. Mr. P. Rowland occupied the chair during the election of a vice-President. Various routine matters having been disposed of, Mr. Gavin Scoular, the newly elected vice President called upon Mr. P. Rowland to read his promised paper on “Our Cereals”.

  • Accident

    Accident occurred between 7 and 8-o-clock on Wednesday morning at Smithfield to a man named John Jamieson, a resident in Gray Street. He had been engaged by Mr. Roberts, of Peachey Belt to do some farm work during the coming harvest season, and was on his way there in a spring-cart with four other persons, when in some way lost his balance and fell over the side of the vehicle. On being picked up he was found to be in an insensitive condition and to be much bruised about the head and face.
