The telephone was invented in 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell, even though many other inventors in his day contributed to various aspects of the device. The effect of the this invention was beyond enormous - it paved a new pathway for improved communication and also new technology. Today the modern telephone is seen around the globe, being used by people everywhere.

Martin Luther King Jr. devoted his life to gain full citizenship rights of the poor, disadvantaged, and racially oppressed in the U.S. During the massive March on Washington he organized, King gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, in which he “subpoenaed the conscience of the nation before the judgement seat of morality.” Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech was a huge influence in the fight for equality, and helped the effort to gain rights for African Americans.

AIDS, or Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome is a disease that is caused by infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This virus has the ability to attack and destroy the body’s ability to fight off infection. AIDS was recognized only toward the end of the 20th century, and in 2004 an estimated 35.9-44.3 million people worldwide were infected with HIV or fully developed AIDS.

The World Wide Web (WWW) was created in 1990 by Tim Berners-Lee at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), as a way for scientists to share documents. It has expanded hugely as an information resource in the years since, and allows computer users to quickly and easily navigate the Internet.

On September 11, 2001, four commercial planes hijacked by terrorists crashed into several areas in NY, VA, and PA. One plane crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center, while a second hijacked plane hit the South Tower. Meanwhile, a third hijacked plane crashed into the pentagon. That same morning a fourth plane crashed near Shanksville, Pa. This horrible event had an economic and psychological effect on the United States, and had a great emotional effect on Americans.
