At age seven, Savion Glover began taking tap lessons and developed a passion for rhythm tap.

At the age of 9, Glover served as an understudy before taking the lead role for the Broadway musical of The Tap Dance Kid. The musical was about a young boy from an upper-middle-class black family nurses a dream to become a tap dancer, with the encouragement of his uncle and despite the disapproval of his father.

Bamboozeled was a Spike Lee movie that portrayed blackface in the film to purposefully invoke a racist and a racial history. Spike Lee notes, “The reality of putting this stuff on their face was devastating for Tommy Davidson and Savion Glover. It took away part of their soul, it took away a part of their manhood, and it made us think of Bert Williams. Tommy and Savion did it for a couple of weeks but Williams had to do that his entire career.”

Glover choreographed the dance moves for Mumbles in Happy Feet. Happy Feet was a hit movie about an Emporor Penguin who is considered the worst singer in the world, however, he was a phenominal tap dancer. You can clearly see why Savion Glover was chosen to choreograph such an amazing role.
