Sarah's Cell Theory Timeline

  • Zacharias Jansen

    Zacharias Jansen
He invented the microscpe which lead to the discovery of cells. The invention of the microscope helped lead to the rejection of spontaneous generation because it allowed scientists to see other organisms' cells.
  • Jan Baptist van Helmont

    Jan Baptist van Helmont
He believed abiogensis which lead to the thought of mixing a dirty shirt with several wheat grainsmit will give you adult mice after twenty one days. This proved the rejection of spontaneous generation because more scientists wanted to test his thought.
  • Robert Hooke

    Robert Hooke
He discovered cells by looking through a microscope. He observed a thin slice of cork and named what he observed as a "cell" which means small rooms. This proved that spontaneous generation was incorrect because things were made up of cells, not just random things.
  • Anton van Leeuwenhoek

    Anton van Leeuwenhoek
He discovered what bacteria was. This discovery helped lead to the rejection of spontaneous rejection by showing that bacteria will grow and random animals do not come from abiotic things.
  • Lorenz Oken

    Lorenz Oken
He created a new system of classification that helped new groups disprove spontaneous generation.
  • Robert Brown

    Robert Brown
He discovered that plant cells have a cell walls. This proves spontaneous generation incorrect because it shows that ransoms things don't protect a cell.
  • Matthias Schleiden

    Matthias Schleiden
Discovered that all plants have cells meaning all plants are living things, as are animals. This lead to the rejection of spontaneous rejection because knowing that all plants are made from cells means that they come from somewhere, instead of just appearing out of nowhere.
  • Theodor Schwann

    Theodor Schwann
He defined cells as the basic unit for animal structure, cells are organisms, and all organisms are made up of at least one cell. This rejected spontaneous generation because the animals are going to have to come from somewhere, not from abiotic factors that do not have cells.
  • Rudolph Virchow

    Rudolph Virchow
He decided that new cells are only formed from pre-exsting cells. One example of spontaneous was frogs coming from mud. This didn't work because mud is an abiotic factor, so it doesn't contain cells. This shows that the frogs can't come from the mud since the frogs contains cells while the mud doesn't which proves spontaneous generation incorrect.
  • Louis Pasteur

    Louis Pasteur
He discovered that soup only spoiled when exposed to air. This rejeted spontaneous generation because he learned that bacteria was not formed in the soup, it formed in the air.
  • Albercht Von Roelliker

    Albercht Von Roelliker
He discovered sperm and eggs are also cells. This proves spontaneous generation wrong by showing there are specific types of cells.
  • Aristotle

    Aristotle
He discovered atoms which proves spontaneous generation incorrect because things aren't composed of just random substances.
