  • Banff National Park Established

    Canada's first national park, Banff National Park was created as a wildlife recreational park and vacation spa. It did not have any consvervation functions.
  • Migratory Birds Protection Act

    A treaty was negotiated between Canada and the United States to prevent the extinction of migratory birds.
  • Canada Wildlife Act

    This act gave the federal government land to create into national wildlife reserves.It also allowed marine wildlife to be recognized and protected.
  • Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA)

    CEPA is a combination of several acts that concern environmental standards, protection, and penalties for violating environmental laws. It also helps deal with the regulation of pollution.
  • Wildlife Policy of Canada

    This policy was a major step towards conservation by putting emphasis on restoration and maintenance of biodiversity and the ecological process.
  • National Forest Strategy

    The National Forest Strategy was a plan to help with sustainable forest management.
  • Canadian Environmental Assessment Act

    This act promised rigorous environmental assessments would be performed for projects carried out by the federal government or Crown corporations.
  • Canadian Biodiversity Strategy

    This strategy was a plan to promote biodiversity and sustainable use of resources, improve the understanding and management of ecosystems, and educate about the need to conserve biodiversity.
  • National Accord for the Protection of Species at Risk

    This protects endangered species and their habitats.
  • Canada Ocean Act

    This act recognized the Exclusive Economic Zone, which is a zone that extends 200 nautical miles off Canadian coasts. Thsi protected zone helps to protect all living and non-living things in the ocean.
