    Soviet Union contained multiple problems- economy falling apart, lacked technological advances suffered from shortage of social freedoms to help the Communist party. Goal of policies was to create a semi-free market system, reflecting sucessful capatilist practices. also to include more people in political process through freedom of expression.

    Results of British elections were announced during conference. The conservatives were dusted (prime minister Winston Church resigned, no elections disturbed Soviet delegation) Many issues discussed during conference- future of Germany+ Eastern Europe. Among all issues discussed , U.S+ British leaders designed to weapon Japanese resistance to surrender.

    Winston Churchill, the war time of Great Britian gave one of his famous speeches on March 5, 1946. Germany had been divided into four occuation zones with Great Britian, U.S, France, and Soviet Union, each governing their own sectors.

    Berlin Blockade/ Airlift
    Berlin airlift was a massive transfer of essential supplies flown into Berlin. Joseph Stalin closed Berlins water and railway transport systems leading to the city. people in the City only had supplies for 36 days. U.S General Curtis E. LeMay led the airlift operation. more than 277,264 flights were made carrying 2,343,315 tons of food plus coal. Stalin lifted blockade on May 12,1949.

    The Soviet Union succesfully launched Sputnik One and it was the worlds first artificial satillite. got the worlds attention and the American public offgaurd. the public feared that the Soviet Union ability to launched satalites would also be translated to the cabability to launched missles that can carry nuclear weapons from Europe to the U.S.
  • U-2 Incident

    U-2 Incident
    American U-2 Spy plane was shot down while conducting espionage over the Soviet Union. the plane could travel at altitudes of 70,000 feet and it had state of the art photography equipment. on May 1st of 1960 the U-2 flight disappeared while flying over Russia. There was a wreckage of the U-2 plane and the pilot was alive and captured.
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    Standoff between John F. Kennedy and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushev over the Soviets plan to install nuclear missiles on Cuba-100 miles from Florida. An agreement was made that nuclS ear arms in Cuba would be withdrawn if the U.S publicly announced that it would not attack Cuba.
  • Vietnam War

    Vietnam War
    spanned more than a decade and caused massive disruption in Southeast Asia and the U.S. War ended in complete communist takeover of Vietnam in 1975. August 2nd of 1964 the North Vietnamese attacked the Uss Maddox and the U.S launched air strikes against North Vietnam. January 27, 1973-Paris peace accord was signed ending U.S involvment in the Veitnam War. War itself did not end till 1975.

    A physical barrier that separted West from East Berlin plus the rest of East Germany until the East German Gov. released border controls. East Germany implementation of Socialism at various levels of society led to a constant flow of refugees to West Berlin plus West Germany through open boarders in Berlin.

    Ceased to exist on December 21,1991, when two of the Republics declared the Creation of the common wealth of Independent States. Stalin led the Union with an iron hand from 1924 until he died in 1953. cost of the Cold War combined with non- Russian ethnic forces within the Soviet Union eventually led to its downfall.
