Routine Screenings

  • Cervical Cancer- Pap Test

    starts at age 21
    how often: every 3 years
    how its performed: a doctor will use a vaginal speculum
    to hold the vagina walls apart. Then a sample of cells from the cervix is collected with a cone shaped brush. Then the doctor will rinse the brush in a liquid filled vial.
  • Breast Cancer- mammography

    starts at age 40
    how often: annually
    breasts are compressed between 2 firm surfaces to spread breast tissue out. Then an x-ray picture is taken and the doctor looks for any signs of cancer.
  • Colorectal Cancer- Colonoscopy

    starts at age 50
    how often: every 10 years
    a long, flexible tube is inserted into the rectum. A tiny video camera is inserted at the tip of tube and allows doctor to view the entire colon.
  • Lung Cancer- CT Scan

    Only recommended for smokers and people with family hx.
    A CT scan takes a series of x ray images from different angles.
    It provides more detailed info than a normal x ray
  • Endometrial Cancer- Transvaginal ultrasound

    age: after menopause
    how often: once a year
    how its performed: an ultrasound transducer is inserted into the vagina and used to bounce high energy sound waves. The echos form a picture. A doctor can identify tumors by looking at image.
