    Rory Clarke begins to start thinking about moving to another country. He wants to move because of the current potato famine in Ireland. He also wants to be able to practice his religion of choice without being discriminated against. He is still keeping his hopes up though.

    Rory has waited for a few of weeks, and nothing has changed. He concluded that the potato famine wasn't going to get better, and people weren't going to stop judging him. And he isn't going to get rich any time soon either! So, he has decided to leave for America because of the great land that they have to offer and Americas freedoms.

    Rory has packed up all of his things and loaded them onto the boat. This boat was headed straight for Ellis Island. Mr. Clarke was very excited to get to the US.

    As Rory Clarke gets close to Ellis Island, he spots the Statue of Liberty. He would be at Ellis Island in a matter of minutes. Rory walks off the boat with his belongings. As he gets off, he is overwhelmed by the number of people waiting in line.

    Rory Clarke passes the tests at Ellis Island. He had to do an information test and a health test. He passed, but afterwards he was very frazzled. It was hard to understand the screener so it was difficult to answer questions well. Later on in the day, he got to take the ferry over to New York!

    Rory stays at a hotel until December 22 when he moves into a friend's home. He met his new friend while playing a new sport called golf. His new friend was an a immigrant from China. When he lived in Ireland, he wasn't fond of Chinese people. Now that he has a new friend, he is very fond of chinese people. He moved into this home hoping to find a job and find his own land soon.

    Rory finds his own piece of land that he likes in South Carolina. But, he has to fight over it with another man. He ends up winning and obtains the piece of land. This piece of land is exactly what he wanted. In the next few weeks, he plans to build a home on it.

    In February 1848 a treaty is signed ending the Mexican-American War. Thus making California a possesion of the United States. This possesion enabled the golf rush.

    Mr. Clarke is having trouble finding a job. So, Rory decides to move west to find a job, Also, he is enticed by the thought of getting more land for his money. He is also looking forward to participating in the golf rush. He is excited and nervous at the same time.

    Rory gets a job as a doctor, his dream job. He has made great friends with the Native American people. They come to his doctor office weekly. Not only that, he struck gold!!! America is finally living up to Rory Clarke's expectations. Rory thinks America is great.
