    Roald Dahl is born in Llandaff, near the Welsh capital of Cardiff, on 13th September 1916.
    Roald's parents, Harald Dahl and Sofie Magdalene Hesselberg, were both Norwegian and he was named after Norway's famous polar explorer, Roald Amundsen

    In February 1920 Roald Dahl's older sister Astri dies from an infection following a burst appendix, aged seven.Weeks later, Roald's father Harald dies of pneumonia at the age of 57. Roald describes his death in Boy, saying: "[Astri's] sudden death left him literally speechless for days afterwards. He was so overwhelmed with grief that when he himself went down with pneumonia a month or so afterwards, he did not much care whether he lived or died."

    In 1934, Roald leaves Repton and, after taking part in a joint public schools expedition to Newfoundland that he describes in the closing chapters of Boy, he begins working for the Shell Oil Company.

    Second World War
    Following the outbreak of World War Two, Roald Dahl leaves Shell and heads to Nairobi to enlist in the Royal Air Force (RAF). He is 23 years old.
    In Nairobi he learns to fly a Tiger Moth plane, training alongside 15 other men of a similar age. In Going Solo he writes: "It is a fact, and I verified it carefully later, that out of those sixteen, no fewer than thirteen were killed in the air within the next two years."

    In 1940 Roald is posted to 80 Squadron, Libya to fly "Gloster Gladiators against the Italians in the Western Desert of In September 1940, Roald's Gladiator crashes in the Western Desert of North Africa and he receives severe injuries to his head, nose and back. He later writes about the experience in the short story A Piece of Cake - originally published as Shot Down Over Libya - and again in Going Solo.

    FIRST PUBLICATION
    In January 1946, Roald Dahl's first short story collection, Over To You, is published by Reynal & Hitchcock. The collection features 10 of Roald's earliest short stories, all using flying themes.
    In February, Roald returns to the UK after four years in Washington and New York
