  • The Gaspee Incident

    The Gaspee Incident
    The Gaspee was a British royal shipin June of 1772, the Gaspee was chashing a merchant ship believed to be smuggling goods. .The next night, a group of men boarded the Gaspee, led by John Brown. John Brown was a wealthy merchant from Providence. They wounded the lieutenant who was commanding the ship. The ship was then set on fire. An investigation then took place, and a reward was to be given if any knew who was responsible.

    The Tea Act
    Act that gave a monopoly on tea sales to the East India buisness. American colonists could buy no tea unless it came from that buisness. The East Indian Company wasn't doing so well, and the British wanted to give it some more business. The Tea Act lowered the price on this East India tea so much that it was way below tea from other suppliers.

    American colonists calling themselves the "Sons of Liberty" and disguised as Mohawk Native Americans boarded three British ships, and dumped forty-five tons of tea into the Boston harbor.

    The first shots starting the revolution were fired at Lexington, Massachusetts. On April 18, 1775, the British General Thomas Gage sent seven hundred soldiers to destroy guns and outside of Boston.

    The Second Continental Congress met in 1775, when the Revolutionary war had started. There were several new delegates. John Hancock from Massachusetts, Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, and Benjamin Franklin from Pennsylvania all attended the event. Things were going bad, the Continental Congress created the Continental Army and named George Washington as commander in chief.

    The British evacuation of Boston was a major victory for the patriots, and George Washington's first victory. On March 4, cannons were positioned on top of Dorchester Heights aimed at the British ships in Boston Harbor.
