Martin Luther was an Augustinian friar, who studied theology in 1508-09 at the university of Wittenberg and later became a lecturer of the bible. A Dominican friar called John Tetzel, who had a reputation as a sucessful indulgence preacher, it was his preaching that made Luther take the step he had been thinking about for more than a year.

Luther circulated his 95 theses, which were posted on the door of the wittenburg castle church. The document contained an attack on papal abuses and the sale of the indulgences by church officials.

When Luther refused to take back his attack, pope Leo X issued a statement outlining the churches doctrine on indulgences, and condemning Luthers ideas.

Luther wrote to Leo X, stating that is was his intention to question of the authority of the pope or the church
