    Abraham Lincoln Assassinated
    Abraham Lincoln is assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. This was in Fords Theater in Washington DC. Lots of people were involved in the assassination. Lincoln had a plan that was a nicer way to pardon the South.
  • Black Codes for Slaves

    Black Codes for Slaves
    These Codes were similar to slavery. They allowed plantation owners to exploit African American workers and allowed officials to arrest and fine jobless African Americans.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1866

    Civil Rights Act of 1866
    This granted full Citizenship to all African Americans. It also gave the federal government the power to intervene in state affairs to protect their rights. This law overturned the Black Codes.
  • President Johnson Impeached

    President Johnson Impeached
    Johnson removed Stanton from office after Johnson refused to leave. This was against the Tenure of Office Act. Then the House of Representatives voted to impeach the president.
  • First Reconstruction Act Passed

    First Reconstruction Act Passed
    This called for the creation of new governments in the South. This was for the 10 states that had not ratified the 14th Amendment. Tennesee rejoined the Union.

    This required the military commanders to register voters. They also had to prepare for state constitutional conventions. This was a lot of work for the commanders.

    Radicals in Control
    The Radical Republicans wanted the South to pay for the war. This was different than Lincoln's plan. They came into control after Johnson was impeached.

    14th Amendment
    This granted full citizenship to all people born in the US. Most African Americans were born in the US, so they too became citizens. This also stated that no state could tak away a citizen's life, liberty, or property.

    Southerners try to stop blacks from voting
    The southerners issue a poll tax and a literacy test that you need to pay and pass to be able to vote. They also issued a grandfather clause, which says if your grandfather voted, than you can vote without paying or passing those things. This made it impossible for blacks to vote because they couldn't read, they had no money, and their grandfathers were slaves, so they couldn't have voted.

    This election was after Johnson was impeached. Ulysses S Grant, the civil war hero, ran against Horatio Seymour. The civil war hero won the election.

    Fifteenth Amendment
    This made it possible for every man to vote. This prevented segregation because of "race, color, or previous condition of servitude. It isn't until later that women are able to vote.
  • Laws to stop Klan activated

    Many laws were passed by Congress. These laws were to stop the violence of the Klu Klux Klan. These laws had limited success.

    The Rebublicans chose Rutherford B Hayes, the governor of Ohio. The democrats chose Samuel Tilden. Tilden was the governor of New York. It looked like Tilden was going to win, but Hayes recieved more electoral votes.

    They are key voters that mostly vote for the Republicans. The African Americans held a majority of the lower house of the South Carolina. They also held major positions, but never in proportion to their numbers
  • Jim Crow Laws

    Jim Crow Laws
    These laws were passed by the southern states. These were sort of like Black codes. They made Blacks/Colored people seperate from white people in almost every public place.
  • Plessy vs. Ferguson

    This ruled that segregation was legal. It was legal as long as African Americans had access to "Seperate but legal" facilities. They were still not treated quite equal.
