  • Emancipation Proclamation

    Emancipation Proclamation
    The Emancipation Proclamation freed 3 million enslaved slaves. Many enlisted into the Union, about 180,000 by the time the conflict ended. This speech served as the first step into Lincoln's idea of reconstruction. This had a positive effect because more people were freed from slavery.
  • The Creation of Black Codes

    The Creation of Black Codes
    Black Codes limited the freedom that emancipated slaves actually had. They were made sign contracts to work cheap labor, basically just the bare minimum that would not be considered slavery. Black codes affected all aspects of life jobs, family, right to own property. The South didn't want to give them equal rights. This had a negative affect on the community because they were still being held back from progressing
  • End of Civil War

    End of Civil War
    The Civil War comes to a end on May 9th 1865. As a result of this, slavery was abolished, and the 13th, 14th and 15th amendment was ratified. What these amendments this was ensure equality for emancipated slaves.

    Ratification of the 14th Amendment
    The 14th amendment gave equal rights to formerly enslaved people. This was significant because this was written in the constitution along with the other rights.
  • Ratification of the 15th Amendment

    Ratification of the 15th Amendment
    The 15th amendment gave the right to vote, regardless of race, color or their previous servitude. This was important because like the previous, this was now written in the consttitutuion along with other rights from the beginning of the country. It also finally gave black men the right to vote.
