  • Union victory in the Civil War

    The Union winning was signifigant because Lee surrenders to Grant and the Black Code is created. Also, the Ku Klux Klan was created in Tennessee in 1865
  • Civil Rights Act was passed

    This is important because the Fourteenth Amendment was finally passed and approved by Congress. Also, the Memphis riot started on May 1 in 1866. On July 30, the New Orleans riot started as well.
  • First Reconstruction Act was passed

    During this time, the second and third Reconstruction Acts were also passed. Also, there was now equality rights for African-Americans in the Republican convention
  • Fourth Reconstruction Act passed

    A former slave was elected governor of Lousianna. Fourteenth Amendment was ratified.
  • Ulysses S. Grant becomes president

    Grant was a former Union General. He didn't provide strong leadership for reconstruction.
  • First Black Senator was elected

    Fifteenth Amendment ratified. First black member sworn into the House of Representatives.
  • Bruce elected to State Senate

    "Black war hero" elected to Congress. There are now six black members of the House of Representatives.
  • 1875-1877

    Civil Rights act enacted by Congress. United States Senate votes not to seat Pinchback.
  • 1877-79

    Four black members in the House. Rutherford B. Hayes inaugurated the President of the United States.
  • 1879

    Final federal troops leave South Carolina which ends the Federal government's presence in the South. Elliott fields office of attorney general of South Carolina.
