    The Black Codes were laws passed in Southern States restricting African-Americans freedom and the right to own property, conduct business, and buy/lease land. It was significant to reconstruction because the Southern Legislatures passed this so they could preserve slavery
  • 13th Amendment

    13th Amendment
    The consitution declared that neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been convicted.It was passed on January 31st, 1865 and ratified December 6th, 1865.It was significant to the reconstruction because it abolished slavery and protected the rights of newly freed people.

  • Civil Rights Act of 1866

    The Civil Rights Act of 1866 was passed by Congress on April 9th, 1866 over the veto of President Andrew Johnson.The act declared that all persons born in the United States were now citizens, without regard to race, color, or previous condition.It was significant to the reconstruction because it was the first United States federal law to define citizenship and affirm that all citizens are equally protected by law.
  • The First Reconstruction Act or Military Reconstruction Act

    This Act passed into law over the veto of President Johnson.The act applied to all the ex-Confederate states in the South.The act split the states into five military districts, each under control of a Northern General and demanded the need for new state delegates and constitutions.It was significant to the reconstruction becasue it took away equality and validity of the Southern States and it demanded that they ratify the 14th amendment to rejoin the union.

It gave the vote to all male citizens regardless of color or previous condition of servitude.It was significant to the reconstruction because it allowed African American men to hold office and their right to vote helped the Republican Party maintain temporary control of the South after the Civil War.

    This act guarantees equal rights to African Americans in public accomodations and jury service.Ruled unconstitutional in 1883.It was significant to the reconstruction because it was ruled unconstitutional, paving the way for the future of segregation and discrimination.
