    Provided many type of benefits for people of north. People were able to get food, shelter and education.
  • Civil War Ends

    After the civil war ended in 1865 the black population in south went up. Many moved north and west working as miners and soldiers.
  • Lincoln Assassination

    Lincoln Assassination
    After the civil war ended Lincoln was shot. The southerns did not like him and what he was suggesting about slavery.
  • 13th Amendment Ratified

    13th Amendment Ratified
    The 13th amendment abolished slavery. This did not give them the same rights as the white people. This also caused for the 14th amendment to be created.

    The Memphis Race riots was an event that took place in Tennessee. It was a racial violence that was caused by political and social tensions.
  • New Orleans Race Riots

    New Orleans Race Riots
    White republicans attacked Republicans who were mostly black. This was caused by the gear of the whites losing control of New Orleans.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1866

    Civil Rights Act of 1866
    This act made all people regardless of race and gender would be a citizen. All citizens were now equally protected by the law.

    This act basically made the south have a more efficient and working government. Many black men were able to vote thanks to this.

    This act gave power to the union generals to overlook the districts. This included the states that used to be in the confederacy excluding Tennessee.

    5 states were divided into military districts in an attempt to make south join union. This was to admit the southern states into the union.

    This act required the states to ratify the 14th amendment. It effected the southern states to were against the black people.

    Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th president of the United States during the reconstruction. One of the more important things he has done was sending troops to south to protect the black citizens.
  • 14th Amendment

    The 14th amendment gave the black people equal rights as citizens. After the 13th amendment was passed many former slaves did not receive the same rights as the white people.
  • 1st Black Senator Elected

    1st Black Senator Elected
    Hiram Revels was first elected back in 1870 as a senator who represented Mississippi. He is an important figure as he represented that the reconstruction was working out at the beginning. Many other followed suit.
  • 15th Amendment

    15th Amendment
    The 15th Amendment gave the black people the right to vote for whoever. Many white people were mad about this and would attack those who came to vote in voting locations.

    This act was also called the Enforcement Act. This act was made to protect the civil and legal rights of the US citizens. It guaranteed equal treatment in public transportation and such places.

    The 1876 election year caused a trouble. Hayes won by electoral college when Tilden had won the popular vote. Hayes had to promise the democrats that he would end reconstruction and withdraw soldiers from south.

    The reconstruction period in the American Timeline lasted between 1865 to 1877. It ended with the compromise of 1877 where the soldiers who were protecting the black people in the south were taken back north.
