Reconstruction Plans

  • Abraham Lincoln's Reconstruction Plan

    Abraham Lincoln's Reconstruction Plan
It addressed three areas of concern: it allowed a full pardon to all of those involved in the military and gave them their land back except for high ranking officials. The plan also allowed states to create new governments when 10% of the voters had sworn an oath to the United States. Lastly, states were encouraged to make deals with the freed slaves as long as their freedom was not encroached upon. (lenient, precursory, fair, reunifying, agreeable)
  • Andrew Johnson's Plan for Reconstruction

    Andrew Johnson's Plan for Reconstruction
His plan gave the whites a free hand as to how they chose to get rid of slavery. It offered no role to blacks in politics. He offered pardons to all Southerners except for Confederate leaders and wealthy land owners. The plan gave all of the lands back to its prewar owners. The new Southern legislatures created the Black Codes, which made sure that blacks had little freedom and were legally forced back onto plantations. (ignorant, wrong, unfair, unmonitored, messy)
  • The Reconstruction Plan by the Radical Republicans

The radicals created the Civil Rights Bill. It was vetoed by the President, but then the Congress overturned it. They approved the 14th amendment which prohibited states from "abridging equality above the law." If suffrage was denied then that state lost representatives. They also barred ex-Confederates from holding state or national office or voting. Divided South into five military regions to protect blacks. (change, option, punishment, majority, ratification)
