  • Sharecropping

    Sharecropping
    The system of sharecropping replaced slavery in many places throughout the South. Slaves worked for rent, and by the late 1860's poor white people worked as sharecroppers too. I think this was important because the "slaves" got a benefit out of working, and got a place to live on.

  • Government

    Between 1865 and 1867, Johnson appointed provisional governors and ordered them to establish all-white governments.

  • Reconstruction Act

    Reconstruction Act
    It divided the south into 5 military districts, and required each state to create new government, that included black men. This was important to the reconstruction Era because black people were included too, and not just white males.

  • 14th Admendement

    14th Admendement
    Congress decided to amend the Constitution with the 14th amendment, which defines citizenship, guarantees equal protection, and extends bill of rights. This was a very important amendment because everyone got equal right.

  • 1868 Election

    1868 Election
    The election was won by Republican and former Union general Ulysses S Grant. He ran against Democrat Horatio Seymour. I think this is important because Grant had many ups and downs throughout his terms, but many people thought he would of been an excellent president.

  • 15th amendment

    15th amendment
    The 15th Amendment ensures the right to vote to all male citizens of the United States, didn't matter what race they were, they all had the right to vote. This was important because black men had a say to what they thought was right and wrong, and were able to vote.

  • Education

    Education
    Fiske and Howard universities were established, as well as many primary and secondary schools because of the Freeman's Bureau which only lasted till 1870. I thought this was really big because African Americans had the right to get education, and they were able to be literate.

  • Civil Rights Acts

    Civil Rights Acts
    Congress overrode the President's veto with a 2/3rd majority, and the Civil Right's Act became law. It outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, and sex. I thought this was important because no matter if you were a female or male, black or white, everyone had equal rights.
