Reconstruction By Trey McLaughlin

  • Black Codes

Black Codes were laws created by radical republicans to make life harder for freed slaves, and former confederate states. Examples of these include a law making it illegal for African Americans to rent farms and farmlands. Or that African Americans could be arrested if they weren't empolyed, which was hard for these people just recently freed. Though other Congress members made a law that courts could charge anyone who mistreated any African Americans. They could even be on jury for the trials.
  • Civil Rights

As a combatant of the Black Codes Republicans gave a new power to the federal government. Now the federal government could protect African Americans instead of the states. Citizenship was granted to African Americans, going against the Supreme Courts decison in 1857 ruling African Americans non-legall citizens. Though Johnson vetoed both bills as unconstitutional and an excesitoin of the federal governments power. Though the republicans overturned the veto instating both as laws.
  • Reconstruction act 1

This first act required states to recreate a states government. As well as turning the states into military districts.
The second reconstruction act solved confusion in the south. They now knew that military leaders had to register voters in their district.
  • Fourteenth Amendment

As the next step from the Thirteenth Amendment, the fourteenth Amendment set everything in stone. Now later laws could not take an African American's citizenship away. It also made it so if not every adult male could vote then the state would lose reprensentation in congress. The amendment also made taking someones life, libertey, or property without a law process illeagal. Confederate leaders couldn't take office unless pardened as well. Southerners toke this as extreme.
