Black Codes
These laws were to help control the newly freed Afican Americans. Some Black codes made it illegal for the African Americans to rent or own farms, it was easier for the white workers to take advantage of them, and some Black codes allowed the officals to fine or arrest any African American that didnt have a job. Black Codes was a little better than slavery. -
Civil Rights Act of 1866
It gave the Federal Goverment the power in state affairs and protect the African Americans. It also gave the African Americans citizenship but the supreme Court had ruled that they were not citizens. The act was supposed to go to the Surpreme Court in the 1857 case Dred Scott vs. Stanford, the Surpreme Court said that the African Americans were not citizens. -
Reconstruction Acts
This law made it that Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Caralina, North Caralina, and Virginia to form new governments. Those ten states then became five milatary districts and the former confederate leaders were banned from serving in these new governments. Then the act made it so the African American male adults can vote in state elections. -
14th Amendment
This amendment made it if, the state didn't let any adult male from voting then the state would lose some people in the represention in Congress. The amendment also saaid that no state can take a person's life, liberty, or property without the process of the law. It prevented confederates from making any national or state office without the Congress pardoning them. The 14th amendment was another way of rejoining the union. -
15th Amendment
This amendment made it that no state and federal government could deny the right to vote to any male citizen because of race, color, past condition of servitude. Giving the African Americans the right to vote the Republicans thought it was better potection for themselves against any unfair white person.
