  • Black Codes

    Black Codes
    Black codes were created by some legislatures in the Southern states. These codes or laws were to control freed African Americans. Even though some things went against the odds for the African Americans it was better than slavery. Some exaples are different bathrooms, water fountains, restaurants, stores, etc.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1866

    Civil Rights Act of 1866
    This Act gave Freedmen's Bureau permisson to set up special courts to charge a person without violating African Americans' rights. This Act also gave citizenship to all African Americans. But before this bill was passed as an Act the head of the country debaited over it. President Johnson vetoed the bill, he did this because he didn't think that it was right that it passed through the congress that did not include representives from all of the states.

    Reconstruction Acts (2)
    The first law stated that the confederate states had to form new governments. The only state that didn't do that was Tennesse, but it still rejoined the Union. Each of the Confederate states were governed by a Union army general so that the states wouldnt go back to living with slaves. The second law empowered the army to register voters in each distirct to help organize state contitutional conventions.
  • 14th Amendment

    14th Amendment
    Since the Congress was worried that the Court might overturn the Civil Rights Act they made another amendment. The 14th Amendment Stated that, "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside." This made sure that the Act of 1866 was granted.
  • 15th Amendment

    15th Amendment
    This was one more major step in recontucting the U.S. This Amendment stated that state and federal governments could not deny the right to vote to any male citizen because of "race, color, or any pervious condition of servitude (slavery). Republicans thought that their job was done after this law, in other words they thought that African Americans would be better now that they could vote but that was just the start.
