    The Freedmen's Bureau was a federal agency established on March 3, 1865 just before the end of the Civil War, during the Reconstruction Era. The Freedmen's Bureau was established to help and protect emancipated slaves (freedmen) during their transition from a life of slavery to a life of freedom.The organization helped the Freedmen's Bureau because they provided food, housing and medical aid, established schools and offered legal assistance.

    President Abraham Lincoln was shot by on April 14, 1865 by John Wilkes Booth. He was the first president of the United States to be assassinated.Andrew Jackson became the 17th president of the United states.

    The Thirteenth amendment was presented to the states for ratification on February 15, 1865. On December 6, 1865 the state of Georgia became the 27th state to ratify the amendment. This was enough (three-fourths) of the states for the amendment to become a part of the Constitution.

    The Civil Rights Act of 1866 declared all persons born in the United States to be citizens, "without distinction of race or color, or previous condition of slavery or involuntary servitude." Although President Andrew Johnson vetoed the legislation, that veto was overturned by the 39th United States Congress and the bill became law. The Civil Rights Act of 1866 was the nation's first civil rights law.

    The goal of the original Ku Klux Klan was to oppose the Reconstruction policies of the radical Republican Congress and to maintain "white supremacy." The Resurgence of the 1920's Ku Klux Klan after World War I during the Red Scare, reached a peak of 4 - 5 million members. A further resurgence of the Ku Klux Klan occurred in the 1960's opposing the Civil Rights Movement.

    They passed the military reconstruction acts of 1867, which divided the South into five military districts and outlined how the new governments would be designed.n 1867 and 1868, Congress passed four “Reconstruction Acts” that outlined what former Confederate states must do to be readmitted to the Union. Congress was controlled by Republicans, many of whom wanted to punish the South for secession.

    The House of Representatives of the Congress of the United States impeached President Andrew Jackson and was accused of high crimes and misdemeanors. Andrew Johnson had to answer 12 articles of Impeachment and was acquitted in the Senate by one vote less than the two-thirds necessary to remove him and was allowed to continue his term of office.Was impeached for his removal of Edwin Stanton,the Secretary of War and member of his cabinet,in violation of the law called the Tenure of Office Act.

    The Fourteenth Amendment is an amendment to the United States Constitution that was adopted in 1868. It granted citizenship and equal civil and legal rights to African Americans and enslaved people who had been emancipated after the American Civil War.The amendment authorized the government to punish states that abridged citizens’ right to vote by proportionally reducing their representation in Congress.
