    Proclamation of Amnesty
    President Lincoln offers a pardon to all southerners who took an oath of loyalty to the United States and accepted the Union's proclamations concerning slavery.

    An alternative to Lincoln's Amnesty. This reqired the majority of adult white males in a former confederate state to take an oath of allegiance to the Union.

    Freedmans Bureau
    A part of the war department that was given the task of feeding and clothing war refugees in the South using surplus army supplies.
  • Ku Klux Klan

    Ku Klux Klan
    A secret society organized by former Confederate soldiers in order to drive out the carbetbaggers and intimidate African Americans voters so that they may regain control of the South for the Democratic party.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1866

    Civil Rights Act of 1866
    This act granted citizenship to all persons born in the United States except Native Americans. Allowed African Americans to own property and stated that they were to be treated equally in court.

    The House of Represenativse charge Johnson with "high crimes and misdemeanors" in office. They claimed he had broken the law by refusing to uphold the Tenure of Office Act. However the voting ending up being 35 to 19 that Johnson was guilty. One short of impeachment.

    African Americans along with many others were granted the full right to vote. This also gave them the ability for them to run for political office, giving them an official place in the political world.

    A group of government officials and distillers in St. Louis, Missouri, cheated the government out of millions of dollars by filing false tax reports.

    A result of the southern democrats suddenly giving support towards the election of President Hayes. Supposedly a promise by the Republicans to pull federal troops out of the south if Hayes were elected.

    A phrase that was coined by Henrey W. Grady, editor of the Atlanta Constitution. It became clear at this point in time that the South could never possibly return to its Pre-Civil War state, so it was decided to try and move ahead with developing a strong industrial economy instead.
