  • The 13th Amendment

    The 13th amendment was ratified which abolished slavery and gauranteed freedom from slavery.
  • Black Codes In The South

    Codes that severly restricted the civil rights of the freed people
  • Freedman's Bureau Is Established

    The Freedman's Bureau was the first form of protection for the freed slaves. It punished those responsible for denying the ex-slaves the same civil rights that belonged to the whites
  • Confederate Pardons And Joining The Union

    Because Andrew Johnson was a democrat many confederates received pardon for their actions and all southern states were able to re-join the union.
  • The Ku Klux Klan

    The KKK was a group formed to make the ex-slaves fearful and try to make them avoid using their rights using terrorism. Also formed to scare whites collaborating with the new governments.
  • Impeachment

    The Republicans had plans to impeach Johnson for his goals and decisions regarding the south, but decided not to with the upcoming election involving Ulysses S. Grant.
  • The 14th Amendment

    This amendment was put into place to gaurantee the federal protection of the basic civil rights.
  • Civil Rights Act

    This act prohibited discrimination in all public accomidations, one step toward equality for all people.
  • Elections And Compromise

    After a deadlock between Hayes and Tilden Hayes was declared the winner on the conditions that federal troops were removed from the south and democrats were given a portion of rights to federal jobs.
