    Civil Rights Act of 1866
    This is was an effort to override the black codes. This act granted citizenship to all persons born in the United States except Native Americans.

    This is one of the largest most violent secret societies of racism. This was started from a group of Confederate soldiers and its goal was to intimidate African American voters to try to control the South for the Dempcratic Party.

    This act divided the former Confederacy, except for Tennessee. They were put into five military districts, with a Union general placed in charge of each.

    Senate voted 35 to 19 that Johnson was guilty. Many senators believed it would set a dangerous precedent to impeach a president because he did not agree with congressional policies.

    This University was named after General Oliver Howard. This was first to be a seminary for African American ministers but later became the first law school for African Americans.

    This Amendment declared that everyone has the right to vote. This was the Congress' realization of the importance of African American voters.

    4,000 schools and 9,000 teachers- half being African American- taught 200,000 formerly enslaved people of all ages. Reconstruction governments built a comprehensive public school system in the South.

    Klu Klux Klan Act
    This Act outlawed the activities of the Klan. Over 3,000 Klan members were arrested in the South, however only 600 were convicted and fewer served time in prison.

    Hayes announced that he wanted to move the country beyond reconstruction. After this in April 1877 he pulled troops out of the South.

    By this time almost 40,000 miles of track for railroads were built with the help of powerful Southerners and Northern financers. Many industries were also growing such as the iron and steel industry, and tobacco processing became big buisness along with cotton mills.
