The Ku Klux Kan was when white peopel dressed in all white and used violence to make sure African Americans did not get theire freedom. They would sometimes even hang black people. They made everyone fear them. The group was also called the K.K.K -

Abraham Lincoln is assainated
Abraham Lincoln was shot at Ford theater by John Wilkes Booth. He was then carried to a boarding-house right by the theater. Abraham Lincoln then died nine hours after this horrible traggedy. -
Andrew Johnson takes office
Andrew Johnson amideintly became president after Abrham Lincol was assasinated. The Radical republicans did not like Andrew Johnson and tried to get him out of office. He then later died in 1869. -
Black codes took afect
These laws where used to try to get African Americans the freedom they deserved. The law explained that African Americans where not property. Many people did not like this law, and they would try to use violence and fear to make sure that this law would not take affect. -

Black codes
Black codes were laws to control freed men and women. This ment that freed African Americans could be captured and arrested. The Black codes were unfair to African Americans. -
Civil Rights act
This act was saying that all people are created equally. It also said that people born in the United States are citizens. This act was a good thing to the African Americans. -
Secound Reconstruction act
It was made to make a better governemnt of the rebel states. This act also ment that the military commanders had to register votes. It also said that states could rejoin the union. -
Reconstruction Act
It was called for the new government in 1867. The 10 states that had not ratified in the Fourteenth Amendment was affected by this act. Congress then forced a plane for reconstruction. -
The 14th Amendment
The 14th Amendment was ratified to the Constitoution in June 9th, 1868. The 14th Amendment was saying that all people born in the United Stated were citizens no matter what color they are. it also is saying that people can not take away any ones freedom or liberty if they are citizens in the United States. -
Amnesty Act
Liberal Republicans made this act in 1872. It pardoned most former confederates. Nearly all white southerners could vote and hold office again. -
Poll tax
Durinig the Reconstruction period people had to pay to be able to vote. This was called poll taxes. People put poll taxes on voting, because people did not want slaves to vote. Slaves coulden't vote when there was poll taxes, because they had never had any jobs so that means they had no money to pay to vote. -
Literacy Tests take action
Literacy tests where what African Americans and whites took so they could be able to vote. In the literacy tests you had to read very hard words and read parts of the Constitouition. If you did not pass these tests you could not vote. -
Jim Crow laws are taken into action
This law seperated Blacks from whites. This ment that African Americans could not go into white schools and lots more. This law was very unfair to African Americans. The group called the Ku Klux Klan used violence to make sure that Blacks did not even interact with the white people. -
Plessy v. Ferguson is in progress
This was a case that was for African Americans to get equall rights, just like all of the whites. This later became a law in Lousiana. This law was then overturned in 1954 by, Brown v. board of education. -
Grandfather Clause
The Grandfather clause was made to prevent African Americans from voting. The grandfather clause was for when white people failed the literacy test they could tell the vote people that theire grandfather of father has voted before. This could not work for African americans because they weren't aloud to vote before, so that means that none of theire relitives have voted.
