    Old Immigrants Come to the US

    Immigrants who came to the U.S. before the turn-of-the-century wave were often labeled the "Old Immigrants". About 10 Million immigrants came between 1800 and 1880.

    The Chinese Exclusion Act denied citizenshpi to people born in China and prohibited the immigration of Chinese laborers. It was passed as an answer to fears tht immigrants were taking Americans' jobs and lowering wages for everyone.

  • Ellis Island Processing Center Opens

    Ellis Island in New York, NY was where many immigrants first set foot on American soil. It helped to filter out immigrants who were unfit to immigrate due to a serious ilness.
