    The 'Arms Race' was a competiton between the Soviet Union and the United States in which both tried to create more Nuclear Weapons than the other. What started this? The dropping of the A-Bomb in Hiroshima.

    The Marshall plan, named after Secretary of State at the time George Marshall, allowed the United States to provide aid to Europian countries. Countries of which had their economy destroyed during World War II. This allowed America to help Europe's economy flourish.

    N.A.T.O (AKA the "North Atlantic Treaty Organization"), was created for the purpose of a the shared defense of Western Europe against the Soviet Union during the Cold War, this would limit the spread of Communism to Democratic countries.

    The Korean War is nicknamed "The Forgotten War" because of the fact that it was during the Cold War and the Vietnam War. It was a battle between North Korea (Communist) and South Korea (Democracy). After fighting across the 38th parallel for 3 years, Korea remains seperated, North Korea as a communist country and South Korea remaining a Capitalist Democracy, protected by the United States of America.

    The Vietnam War was a long, costly armed conflict that pitted the communist regime of North Vietnam and its southern allies, known as the Viet. Congress against South Vietnam and its principal ally, the United States. It was a loss for the United States.

    The Sputnik 1 was the first satelitte (created by the Soviet Union) to be launched into space. This was considered THE starting point for the Space race, followed by the Apollo 11 (U.S).

    Bay of Pigs Invasion
    President Kennedy unleashed a plan called the 'Bay of Pigs' in 1962. The plan was to invade Cuba 'undetected' and to overthrow Communist political leader, Fidel Castro.

    This is considered one of the downfalls of John F. Kennedy's presidency- instead of overthrowing Fidel Castro (whom was aware of the opperation), 90 americans were executed by Fidel's army and others were captured and used for ransom.

    Worried of a chance of being attacked by America, the Soviet Union Prime Minister, Nikita Khrushchev, made an alliance with Cuban Political leader Fidel Castro in which Castro allowed the Soviet Union to hold several nuclear weapons in case of a needed attack on the United States. In return, the United States stationed nuclear weapons in Turkey for the same cause.

    After 2 weeks of paranoia, Nikita Khrushchev sent a letter to President Kennedy, suggesting that both lay down their Nuclear Arms and suggested a compromise. In that instant, it was all over.
