  • Lincoln Re-Elected

    Since Sherman one in Atlanta, Lincoln became more popular which helped him get re-elected. This was an important event in the war. He was commander in chief of the army, so every decision made my Lincoln had a direct impact on the war.
  • Confederacy Surrenders

    Lee’s troops were surrounded so Grant called Lee to surrender. On the day of April 9th, these 2 commanders met at Appomattox Courthouse. Here, they agreed on surrendering. This ended the war, and the United States would soon experience changes.
  • Abraham Lincoln is Assassinated

    Abraham was killed by John WIlkes Booth in Fords theatre in Washington. It happened on Good Friday and his assassin believed that killing Lincoln would help the south. The south disliked Lincoln because they thought we wanted to do away with slavery. On January 1st he passed the Emancipation Proclamation and this declared slaves within the Confederacy free.
  • Johnson Reconstruction Plan

    This plan called for special state conventions. It repealed the state’s decree of secession, had to do with Confederate debts, and ratified the 13th amendment). It wanted readmission of states to be quick but leading confederates couldn’t vote. This plan was put into action and it was the compromise between the Lincoln plan and the Congressional plan.
  • Reconstruction Acts Start

    These were the guidelines of how the south would soon again join the Union. The South had 4 strict guidelines they had to follow. These were significant because the reconstruction acts caused the South to begin to move away from it’s old lifestyle.
  • 14th Amendment gets ratified

    This amendment is about citizenship, what makes a US citizen, and rights. It declared that the law applied to everyone. It was for African American’s that were slaves before the Civil War.
  • 15th Amendment gets ratified

    This gave all men rights to vote. Even African Americans. This was significant because it was the first time blacks had been given an important equal right that white men had. Women of any color were still lacking rights like the right to vote.
  • Civil Rights are enacted

    This act said that people were entitled to any accommodation in public places and inns. This was intended to end all discrimination. The Supreme Court of the USA later overturned this law.
  • Compromise of 1877

    This states that the Democrats of the south would respect Hayes as President. This was only if the Republican Party accepted certain demands. Hayes promised things like internal improvements and withdrew troops from the South. It turned the Union into a modern-nation state and marked the government’s abandonment in it’s pursuit for African American Inequality.
