    Phil knight had an idea that would change the sports world with the clothes they wear and how they perform. He has changed the way athletes train, perform, work, and he has set the world champion standard for all athletes everywhere.

    Phil Knight was born on Feburary 24th 1938 in Portland Oregon to Lota Knight and William Knight. William worked as a lawyer then as a newspaper publisher. They lived in a a nice one story home in Portland.

    Phil attended Jesuit highschool in Beaverton OR.. Phil did track in highschool and was a promising runner. He had good grades and was a good kid. But his track performance was never good enough for his dad. His dad always pushed him to become a better runner. Phil was determind to be a better runner and his ideas started with the shoes.

    Knight’s interest in running continued during his undergraduate years at the University of Oregon where he was a member of the track team. He distinguished himself as a miler, with 4:15 as his best time. It was at Oregon that Knight first met Bill Bowerman, the school’s track coach and the man who would later help Knight design his famous Nike running shoes.

    Phil Knight traveled to Japan on a world-tour. Seemingly on a whim, Knight scheduled an interview with a Japanese running shoe manufacturer, Tiger. Presenting himself as the representative of an American distributor interested in selling Tiger shoes to American runners, Knight told the businessmen of his interest in their product. Blue Ribbon Sports--the name Knight thought of moments after being asked who he represented, was born. The Tiger executives liked what they heard and Phill orderd.

    After graduating Oregon with a BBA in 1959 knight went on and got his masters in buisness administration at Stanford, while at stanford Phil wrote his masters thesis on running and this thesis was " If Americans become more oriented toward fitness, a shoemaker could produce an athletic shoe which would find a market with both professional athletes and the public at large"

    By 1964 knight had sold $8,000 worth of tigers and placed an order for more. Coach Bowermen and Knight worked together, but ended up hiring a full time salesmen, Jeff Johnson. After cresting $1 million in sales and riding the wave of success, Phil devised the Nike name and had a student at Portland university make the Nike swoosh for 5 dollars.

    By the late 1970s Blue Ribbon Sports officialy became Nike and went from $10 million to $270 million in sales . Soon Nike would be partially known in the sports world as a underdog. All Phil could do now is make new products and hope for the best. Little would he know the 80s and 90s would yield greater profits.

    Nike signs Michael Jordan to an endorsement contract this was a big accomplishment for Phil. The first model of his signature shoe, the air Jordan 1, originally banned by the NBA, drawing a tremendous amount of publicity to Phils company.

    The famous phrase, "just do it", is introduced at the suggestion of fourth grader Tiffany Speir from an elmementary school in Dallas Texas.

    Phil opens the first Nike town in his home town Portland. Then he opens Nike world headquarters in Hillsboro. Nike wins advertiser of the year at the Cannes advertising festival this got them well known. Phil aproaches the U.S and Brazilian national soccer team and sign them to a contract. Phil now sets his sights on Tiger Woods, and once he signs him that's when things get very serious.

    As Phil was in his house in Oregon he got a phone call saying that his friend and co-founder of Nike, Bill Bowerman had past away at the age 88 on December 24 1999.

    In 2004 Phil decided to step down as CEO and president of Nike, but continues to contribute to Nike as chairman. This was a hard decision for him but it was for the best of the company he thought.

    Phil and Penny, his wife, donate $500 million to the the Oregon hopital OHSU for cancer at the Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU)
  • Present Day

    Present Day
    Today Phil enjoys donating and giving back to the community by donating money to Oregon university and OHSU he also has a Phil Knight Cancer Institute in Beavertown. He continues to leave his legacy as the greatest inventor in sports history.
