Election of George W. Bush
The election of Bush served as an indicator of the country's mood and aspirations topwards conservative values. His election casme 12 years after that of his father, George H.W. Bush. -
War in Afghanistan
The US, and a coalition of allies, went into Afghanistan to route out the Taliban and find Osama Bin Ladin, who was killed in 2011. This war started because of the 9/11 attacks and in part caused the Global Financial Crisis. -
The Destruction of the Twin Towers
This Incident became the greatest strike on American soil since Pearl Harbor and it fostered hatred towards Islamic countries and in many ways started the wars in Iraw and Afganistan. The event both strenthened America's resolve against terrorrism and served as an example for later terrorrist incidents. -
Patriot Act
THe Patriot Act created greater national serurity because of the broad concerns from Americans after 9/11 and the anthrax incidents. -
War in Iraq
The War in Iraq, which ended in 2011 started when there were claims that iraq had weapons of mass destruction. The US and its allies invaded and occuppied Iraq but was complicated by Sunni-Shia relations and Al-Qaeda operations. -
Hurricane Katrina
This Category 3 Hurricane crippled New Orleans and much of the Gulf Coast. The levee system failed horribly and deepened the crisis. It became the most costly American hurricane and one of the costliest in human lives. -
Global Financial Crisis
The financial collapse was caused by many major and minor changes including the lending of easy credit, military spending in Iraq, medical expenses, a less successful than predicted housing market, and huge fund withdrawals. This reccession will make it hard for my generation to find well paying jobs and we will end up paying for the defecit. -
Election of Barrack Obama
He became the first African-American president and expressed a growing national optumism with the slogan "Yes we can." Many of his bills, such as "Obamacare" or nationalized health care, are still being fought over in Congress. -
First Year of Summer Camp
Kibutz Hatzofim at O.S.R.U.I. was the first overnight camp I attended. -
First Track Season
In the spring of 6th grade I joined the track team to do long distance running. -
Bar Mitzvah
The rite of passage to attain Jewish adulthood. -
Boston Marathon Bombings
This event both showed the lengths that the US was willing to go through to catch terrorrists and the ability of terrorrists to radicalize Americans. -
5th/3rd River Bank Run
My first 10k. -
First NSA Revelation
Showed the extent of government intervention following the Patriot Act in a post 9/11 America. This event was one of the many that occurred because of 9/11. In this way, 9/11 became a turning point in modern America. -
Got a Trumpet
I started playing jazz music as part of the middle school jazz band. -
Joined Robotics
The Forrest Hills robotics team to my science class. I later enrolled in their summer program. -
Invasion of Crimea
The invasion of Crimea was to gain Russian access to the Black Sea. It also showed Putin as a revived Russian authority. The event became the only incident in which one country invaded another for land in recent history and temporarily forced the US into a Cold War style senario. -
APUSH Test
I took the APUSH test and got a 5! It was the first counted academic non-GPA effecting test I took. -
