    Francois Duvalier was born on April 14, 1907 in Haiti. His family was apart of the middle class. Francois nickname was Papa Doc.

    Papa Doc was one of the founders of Haitian Intellectual Griot movement of the 1930’s. The members celebrated their African roots and practiced Voodoo. That is an important Haitian culture.

    Duvalier graduated in 1934 from Haitian National University Medical School. Dr. Duvalier served on staffs of local hospital. Then in 1943, he was recruited by the US Financed fights against yaws.

    In 1939, Papa Doc married Simone Duvalier. She is known as Mama Doc. They had three daughters and one son. (Nicole, Mary-Denise, and Simone)(Jean-Claude )

    Around 1950-1960, the Haiti elections were on. “The Bogeymen” were responsible for terrorizing and killing an opponent of Papa Doc. Later, Papa Doc announced his victory.

    Fidel Castro, in 1927, came to power. Cuba began to harbor Haitian refugees. They just had escaped the terrible conditions of the Duvalier Government. One of Castro enemies, Rafael Trujillo was a director of the Dominican Republic, feared a Cuban invasion in Haiti. This lead Dominican interference to Haiti affairs.

    After the election of 1961, Papa’s rule in 1963, observers though it was a matter of time before Papa had moved himself as permanent Haitian President. On April 1, 1964, that happened. The legislative Chamber, did whatever Doc wanted. They rewrote in 1957, the constitution. Making a point of Article 197 to change. Duvalier would become president for life. On June 22, 1964, Papa was officially declared president for life.

    After the time in the 1960’s, the Haitian politics was a little calmer. Taken over his country and holding off the United States, the OAS, and the Dominican Republic was in the process. By then, Doc was in complete control.

    He survived several damaging hurricanes and many attempts to overthrow him. Duvalier began suffering from heart disease and other health problems. He was suffering badly. (1970’s)
  • Death

    On April 21, 1971, Papa died because of complications of .diabetes mellitus. After his death, he had a recrute. His son Jean-Claude took over the control immediately.
