The Langley was launched in 1912 as the naval collier. On December 8, 1941, the Langley was part of the Asiatic Fleet in the Philippines when the Japanese attacked. On February 27, the Langley parted company from the convoy and headed straight for the port at Tjilatjap, Java.

American SK radars picked up the enemy at 1:13 p.m. at 119 miles and closing. Two dive-bomber gunners fired from the rear of their parked planes.

In January 1945, MacArthur was given control of all American land forces in the Pacific. On January 9, 1945, U.S. forces sealed off the Bataan Peninsula in the north; on February 16, the 8th Army occupied the southern tip of Bataan, as MacArthur drew closer to Manila and the complete recapture of the Philippines.

At 11:00 the battleship South Dakota hoisted the flag signal "Never Forget Pearl Harbor" to Task Force 39.4.1. Abbot was there, Cruisingabout 3,000 yeards offshore to spot the fall of the shells and screen the battleships.
