    Oscar Wilde was the second of three children, born to Sir William and Jane Francesca Wilde.

  • Oscars Education

    Until the age of nine, Oscar was educated at home by a French bonne and a German governess. Oscar then attended Portora Royal School in Enniskillen.
  • Wilde Advancing in Education

    Wilde left Portora with a royal scholarship to read classics at Trinity College, Dublin, from 1871-1874. Here, WIlde shared a room with older brother Willie Wilde.

    Wilde returned to Engladn in 1878 where he found his childhood sweetheart, Glorence Balcombe, getting married. Wilde then spent hte next six years in London, Paris, and in the U.S. where he gave lectures as a profession.

    Wilde was sent to gail because of gross indecency and sentenced to two years' hard labour. Here he became ill. Wilde was released on May 19, 1897.

    Wilde died of cerebral meningitis.

    Wilde was initially buried inthe Cimetiere de Bagneux; in 1909 his remains were disinterred to Pere Lachaise Cemetery. In 1950 his ashes were placed in a compartment in the tomb.
