1955- Chomsky Awarded PHD
Chomsky graduated from the University of Pennsylvania based on the work of one chapter in a book which would later be published as “The Logical structure of Linguistic Theory.” After Graduation he began as a Professor at renowned MIT. -
1965 – Aspects of the Theory of Syntax
This work became the standard reference for syntacticians. Aspects introduced the lexicon as the new idea of idiosyncratic information. He also at this time began working with Rene Descartes and Wilhelm von Humboldt. -
1957 - Synatic Structures
Chomsky published “Syntatic Structures” which challenged grammar as a mathematically precise system of rules and character structures. This idea divided language into 3 sections, Phonic, transformational and Morphophonemic. This work changed the focus of linguistics from discovery to evaluation. Youtube -
1968 – The Sound of Pattern of English
This book co authored with MIT colleague Morris Halle where they contributed the innovative idea that there were phonological rules of distinctive feature and not just undivided phonemes. -
2011 US peace prize for anitwar activities
Chomsky has had many major contributions to the field of philosophy and linguistics, but is also an avid activist. He was awarded the US Peace Prize for his Antiwar Activities spanning over 5 decades. Chomsky is still known for his criticism of media and government, war, and capitalism.
