    Churchill

    Mowat's journey begins in Churchill, located next to the western shore of Hudson bay. The locals are unsure of him and his journey, and so is he. In doubt, Mowat waits to catch a bush pilot to the barren lands beyond.

    Bush Pilot

    Farley Mowat finally finds someone who will take him to untouched lands. He waits one night for the plane to recover, and engages in a rough ride the next day. The plane is not in good shape, but eventually he is dropped off into the icy lands.

    Huskies

    As the light of his first day grew dark, Mowat decides to take shelter with his canoe. Soon, a chorus of howls fill his ears, and he believes from the paws he see's that he's discovered a pack of wolves. To his surprise, they're huskies, which belong to a local.

    Mike the Eskimo

    The owner of the aforementioned huskies was named Mike. Although upset about his not very bona fide wolves, in return, Mowat gained shelter.

    Mike's Sick Mother

    After introducing the Eskimo to some of his traps and dissections, Mowat is soon informed that Mike's mother is sick, and he must leave. While this is useful for his work, Mowat is slightly disappointed that Mike could not help introduce him to the wolves in the area.

    Wolf Confrontation

    Finally setting out to work, Mowat hikes along the icy ground in hopes of finding something. He is interrupted by the howls of what he assumes to be a husky. Trying not to scare the "husky", he get's down on his stomach and crawls. To his surprise, as he lifts himself over the edge, he is met with none other than a gigantic wolf. After a few seconds of staring, Mowat jumps back in fear while the wolf bounds down the mountain.

    Den

    Suffering through a night of paranoia, Mowat goes out once again. Soon, an unexpected spectacle greets him. Two wolves are playing tag. He is surprised at this playfulness, and observes them further. Soon, he comes across the wolves den. He has found the center of his research.

    Watched

    Heading out once again, Mowat looks out for wolves throughout the day. To his dismay, there are none. Finally, he turns around only to face the wolves. His ego seemed to lower, and he quickly yelled at them to leave. Humiliated, he returned home.

    Watched Again

    Getting over his humiliation, he ventures down to the den. As the pups notice him, he is met with an adult wolf staring him down. Surprised, he slips down the slope. More wolves come to watch, and he angrily takes out his gun. Clogged, it does nothing as he pulls the trigger. In a fit of anger, he goes back to the cabin.

    A New Mindset

    Mowat thinks about how he has been viewing the wolves, what he has been taught beforehand, and how it contradicts. Realizing this, he comes to the conclusion that he will not see the wolves how he been told to, but how they actually are.

    Setting Camp

    The time comes for Mowat to truly study these mysterious creatures. The true beginning of his research starts here, a small tent situated not too far from the den.

    Property

    Noticing the boundaries lining their territory, Mowat tries and see what happens when he adds his own scent. It's a lot of work, and eventually he finishes marking territory. As the wolf comes around, he doesn't take a second glance and covers it. Mowat watches in awe at their non-caring nature towards his presence.

    Naming

    Mowat progresses with his acceptance of the wolves. Soon, he has discovered the traits of certain wolves and given them names. He admires the strength of George, how angelic and graceful Angeline is, and the selflessness of Albert.

    Mice

    Confused as to how the wolves are surviving without caribou, he goes to investigate. He's shocked to find that they have been surviving off of mice. In hopes of proving that their mice diet is real, he goes on it himself.

    Mike's Brother

    Mowat is soon greeted with Mike's return. They cautiously invite him to dinner, with his brother, Ootek, acting extremely weary of him. He politely turns down their offer and sits in silence.

    Eggs

    Ootek confronts Mowat with a bundle of eggs. He explains that he is worried for Mowat's health, and Eskimos say that eating a mice will damage your body. He takes the eggs graciously, and while they are slightly expired, he eats them to show his appreciation.

    Albert's Love

    Ootek and Mowat decide to try and introduce a husky to Albert. The uncle slowly welcomes the husky, and they are soon connected by the hip.

    Discovering Caribou

    Mowat takes a trip with Ootek, and he decides to wash up as they hunt. Spotting wolves, he leaves his clothes behind to follow them. He watches as they hunt, noticing that what Ootek said about the wolves helping their species is true. The wolves do not prey on the strong caribou, but the weak ones.

    Leaving

    Ootek bursts in to inform Mowat of the plane that had passed overhead. Sending out a smoke signal, he tells the pilot to get word to his chief. Eventually, he finds himself on his way home.

    Traps

    Long after Mowat had left, word of a pilot dropping cyanide wolf getters onto the Wolf Bay. It is unknown of the outcome.
