Ernest Nagel was an American philosopher of science. He was born at Nove Mesto, Czechoslovakia and he immigrated to the United States when he was ten years old, becoming naturalized in 1919.

He graduated from City College in 1923
He received an MA in mathematics from Columbia in 1925 and a PhD in philosophy in 1930.
He served as the "John Dewey" professor of philosophy at Columbia University from 1955 to 1966 and retired in 1970 -
Along with Morris R. Cohen, Nagel published this work contributing to the philosophy of science and enriching the traditional views as part of the empiricist and naturalist movements he was apart of.

in this paper, Nagel emphasized over the philosophical implications of quantum theory. Like Albert Einstein, Nagel denied that quantum theory has "indeterministic consequences". He also showed how intellectual confusion increases when contextual distinctions and the relevance of language are ignored
