My grandmother read in Spanish, She seemed so absorbed in what she was reading; I watched but could not make sense of what she was reading.

We were not read to as children. I watched with curiosity as my older siblings learned to read. I later learned to read by watching them and following along. As I grew I became a voracious reader, I would read anything I could get my hands on including he backs of cereal boxes at the breakfast table.

By the time I entered first grade I could read, I didn't particularly enjoy the silly things we were asked to read from My Little Red Story Book, "See Sport run, run Spot, run..." What I really loved were poems like, "A Frog Went A' Courtin," "Song of the Swallows," and "Chanticleer and the Fox." I read "Hilightes Magazine" for the first time.

My mom purchased a set of World Book Encyclopedia from a door-to-door salesman. I read items of interest from this set through high school. I also enjoyed works by poets such as "The Song of Hiawatha," by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

My tastes are somewhat dark for a child, poetry fascinates me, favorites included "The Highwayman" by Alfred Noyes, and "Little Boy Blue" by Eugene Field.

Bought and read comic books such as "Millie the Model," "Archie," and "Betty and Veronica." This is what I spent my pen money on.

Introduced to Louisa Mae Alcotts's "Little Women," and Lucy Maude Montgomery's "Anne of Green Gables" I enjoyed reading and discovering what life was like for girls of a different era.

Read "The Diary of Anne Frank" and John Howad Grisham's, "Black Like Me." I am shocked at how inhumane people can be towards people who are different from them.

My older brother brings home a box of National Geographic Magazines. I discover a wealth of information with amazing photographs.

Once again, I am drawn to the darker side of literature; I discovered the poetry and works of Edgar Allen Poe. Favorites are "The Raven," "Annabelle Lee," and "Spirits of the Dead,"

During this period my favorite reads were mostly books that elicited an emotional response: Emile Bronte's "Wuthering Heights." and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's "The Little Prince." I also enjoyed reading fantasy genres like JRR Tolkien's "Silmarillion" and "The Hobbit,"

I begin reading to my own children, we take great pleasure from reading selections like 'Curious George,' and anything by 'Dr. Suess.'

I received a gift of Stephen King's, "Salem's Lot," and fell in love with his books. I have read almost all of his books since then, notable exception is "Danse Macabe," his only non-fiction book.

New addition to my son's growing library, J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy joins "The Hobbit" on his book shelf, we read these works together.
