    Anne, duke de Montmorency, was born in Chantilly, France on March 15, 1493. He was born to his father Guillaume de Montmorency. His father was known as the Baron de Montmorency. There isn't very much information about his mother. He also had a younger sister named Louis de Montmorency.

    Anne de Montmorency had a high presence to the royal court because of his status with the king and was made a general. Anne de Montmorency and his troops were defeated at the Battle of La Bicocca in 1522. The Battle of La Bicocca was part of the Italian War of 1521-26. The end result was a victory for the Spanish-Imperial and Papal armies. There were 3,000 or more casualties at this battle. Although it was a difficult loss, Montmorency was given the position of Marshal of France for his courage.

    Anne de Montmorency was named Grand Master of France in the year 1526. He was charged with the supervision of the royal household. He also supervised the King's private sevice. The Grand Master of France was one of the Great Officers of the Crown of France and head of the "Maison du Roi", the king's royal household. The position is very similar to that of Lord Steward in England.

    Henri I de Montmorency was born in 1534 to his parents Anne de Montmorency and Madeleine, the daughter of René of Savoy. He was also born in Chantilly. He would go on to succeed his father in becoming Marshal of France and, later, Constable of France. After the death of his elder brother, he became Duke de Montmorency.

    Montmorency joined the king in Picardy and at the end of the Netherlands campaign marched to relieve Turin. He led the French troops in 1537 when they attacked Artois in the Netherlands and captured many towns before the ten-year truce. Because of these accomplishments, Montmorency was made constable of France by the King.

    Under the title of Sieur de Damville, by which he is usually remembered, Henri de Montmorency fought in various theatres of war. Because of this, Montmorency was made governer of Languedoc. Languedoc is a former province of France. When people refer to the old provinces of France, they actually refer to the governements as they existed in 1789. Henri de Montmorency was known for ruling Languedoc greatly.

    Anne de Montmorency led the royal army to victory at the Battle of St-Denis. Unfortunately, he was mortally wounded and died two days later in Paris, France. He was at the age of 74 when he died. His eldest son Francois suceeded his father as Duke de Montmorency after his death. After the death of Francois, his second eldest son, Henri, would succeed his brother as Duke.

    After the death of his older brother François, Henri became the third Duke of Montmorency. As leader of the so-called "politicians", he played an important role in the French Wars of Religion. It was also his responsibility to lead the way his father and older brother did. He became a loyal supporter of Henry IV in 1593. It was that same year that he became Constable of France.

    Born at Chantilly, Oise, Henry was the son of duke Henry I. He was the godson of Henri IV, and was constantly receiving marks of the royal affection. His name and his personality, rendered him at an early age the darling of the court and the people. He was only seventeen when Louis XIII raised him to the office of grand admiral. He succeed to his father's title in 1614. He also was governor of Languedoc. He succeeded his father as Duke of Montmorency.

    Henri de Montmorency died in 1614 at the age of 79. His son, Henri II de Montmorency, succeeded to his title after his death having previously been made Grand Admiral. Grand admiral is a historic naval rank, generally being the highest such rank present in any particular country. Its most notable use was in Germany.
