  • Black Codes

    Black Codes
    Black Codes were laws passed by Southern states to control the freed African Americans. One code made it illegal for African Americans to own farms. Another one allowed officials to fine or arrest African Americans that did not have a job. Black codes were basically laws that were just meant for African Americans.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1866

    Civil Rights Act of 1866
    The civil Rights Act of 1866 was created by the Radical Republicans. This law let the government get involved in state affairs to protect African Americans' rights. It also stated gave citizenship to African Americans. President Johnson vetoed the bill. He said they were unconstitutional.
  • 14th Amendment

    14th Amendment
    It was ratified in 1868. It said that all people born or naturalized in the U.S. were citizens. IT protected the citizenship extended to to Afircan Americans. It said no state could take a person's life, liberty, or property.
  • Reconstruction Acts

    Reconstruction Acts
    This says that the 10 states that have not ratified the fourteenth Amendment needed to form new government. The act divided the 10 states into 5 military districts. Former confederate leaders were banned from serving in these new governments.It gave African American men the right to vote.
  • 15th Amendment

    15th Amendment
    This said that no federal government could take away a male citizen's right to vote. The States thought that their job was done. They thought that this would help African Americans Protect themselves. It was ratified by the states in 1870.
