Melbourne's Archbishops

  • James Alipius Goold

    Archbishop Goold was the first Archbishop of Melbourne and was installed on the 10th of May 1874. He also laid the foundation of the first St. Patrick's Church.
  • Thomas Joseph Carr

    Thomas Carr was the second Archbishop of Melbourne, he was also Goold's successor. He was installed on the 16th of November 1886 and administered the Archdiocese of Melbourne for 30 years.
  • Daniel Mannix

    Archbishop Mannix administered the Archdiocese of Melbourne for 46 years. He was installed in 1917 after Thomas Carr died.
  • Justin Simonds

    Archbishops Simonds was the first Australian- born Archbishop and the successor of Mannix. He was installed on the 6th of November 1963.
  • James Knox

    Archbishop Knox succeeded Simonds and was installed on the 13th of April 1967. resigned as Archbishop on the 1st of July 1974 and died on the 26th of June 1983.
  • Frank Little

    Archbishop Little succeeded Cardinal Knox and was appointed on the 1st of July 1974 by Pope Paul VI. He retired in 1996.
  • George Pell

    Archbishop Pell was the seventh Archbishop of Melbourne and was installed on the 16th of July 1996. On the 26th of March 2001 he was appointed Archbishop of Sydney.
  • Denis James Hart

    Archbishop Hart was appointed on the 22nd of June 2001. He retired as Archbishop on the 29th of June 2018.
  • Peter Andrew Comensoli

    Archbishop Comensoli was appointed on the 29th of June 2018. He is the current Archbishop of Melbourne.
