    The McKinney Homeless Assistance Act of 1987 (Pub. L. 100-77, July 22, 1987, 101 Stat. 482, 42 U.S.C. § 11301 et seq.) is a United States federal law that provides federal money for homeless shelter programs. It was the first significant federal legislative response to homelessness.

    President Bill Clinton renamed the McKinney Act to the McKinney‐Vento Homeless Assistance Act after the passing of Congressman Bruce Vento who had been a key supporter of the original legislation since its passage in 1987.
  • McKinney-Vento Act Amendment (NCLB) (PL 107-110)

    Congress again reauthorized the McKinney Education of Homeless Children and Youth Program as the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Improvements Act in the No Child Left Behind Act. NCLB amends the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) to revise, reauthorize, and consolidate various programs.
  • Homeless Emergency Assistance and Rapid Transition to Housing Act (HEARTH) of 2009

    The HEARTH Act amends and reauthorizes the McKinney-Vento Act. The mission is to "coordinate the Federal response to homelessness and to create a national partnership at every level of government and with the private sector to reduce and end homelessness in the nation while maximizing the effectiveness of the federal government in contributing to the end of homelessness."
