The Roosevelt left New York to go to Cape Sheridan.
-
At Oyster Bay, New York, President Theodore Roosevelt came on board to wish them luck.
-
The Roosevelt arrived at Cape Sheridan and Matt and the men began training.
-
The men were ready to go to the North Pole and everybody each brought a special possesion.
-
Borup and Barlett had left Cape Columbia to pioneer the trail.
-
At 6:30 AM Matthew, Peary, and Barlett started their expedition to the North Pole.
-
Peary and Henson caught up with Barlett at the Big Lead.
-
Matthew, Peary, and Barlett were still waiting by the Big Lead and Matthew saw the sun appear.
-
It was clear and calm and the Big Lead was frozen over and they crossed it.
-
It was Ross Marvin's turn to go back.
-
Henson and Peary caught up with Barlett beside a wide lead. Henson and Peary built their igloos. Barlett and the dogs were loose on a floating island. The ice floe drifted into the lead and the dogs and the men jumped to land.
-
It was Barlett's turn to go back, and Matthew repaired sledges.
-
At midnight Matthew, Peary, and the four eskimos stared out on foot, and then rode out on sledges.
-
Matthew went on thin ice aand broke through the ice and into the water. Then Ootah saved him.
-
Matthew had calculated that him and Peary had marched 100 miles since Barlett turned back.
-
Matthew, Peary, and the eskimos had made it to the North Pole and planted the Stars and Stripes.
-
Matthew and Peary went back to Cape Columbia and were happy to smell hot coffee.
